He had been a teacher and principal in Pennsylvania, retiring in 1981; he was involved in numerous programs to increase student achievement levels; enjoyed church, travel, adventure and volunteer work; was active in Marietta, GA, with Habitat for Humanity, golfing and woodworking; had a passion for golf and was rewarded with four hole's-in-one, two at the same golf course; was a 67-year member of Hartford Lodge No. 445 Free and Accepted Masons; a 32nd degree member of the Keystone Consistory, Scranton, Pa; and member of St. George Episcopal Church, The Villages.

Survivors include his sister, Dorothy Dyson, Broomall, Pa; daughters, Mary E. Brennan, The Villages, Barbara A. Cloud, Levittown, Pa; sons, John A., Fairless Hills, Pa., James R., Earlville, Md., Robert A., Wallace, Calif., Bruce A., Wilmington, Del; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Beyers Funeral Home, Lady Lake, with funeral service following at 3 p.m.

An additional service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at the First Universalist Church, Brooklyn, Pa. Interment will be at the
Mountain View Cemetery in Brooklyn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Villagers for Hospice, Cornerstone Hospice, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages 32162-9985 or St. George Episcopal Church, 1250 Paige Place, The Villages 32159.

Capron, Jr., 90, died peacefully on Friday, May 29 , 2009 at the Casey Hospice Center in Rockville, MD. Mr. Capron was born on February 5, 1919, in Bridgeport, CT, the son of James Byron and Charlotte Ruth Hatie Capron. After high school, Jim Jr. enlisted in the Navy in 1936 and served as a radio intercept operator aboard various ships leading up to World War II. In 1940, he returned to Washington to become one of 176 Navy and Marine radio operators who were specially trained at a unique school located on the roof of the old Navy Department building. As a member of the "On-The- Roof" Gang (OTRG), Jim was trained to intercept and analyze Japanese radio communications. This group of dedicated and skilled operators formed the vanguard of the U.S. Naval Communications Intelligence efforts and laid the cornerstone of Naval Cryptology. After graduating from the OTRG, Jim (aka "Cap") was assigned to the Pacific Theater, including stations at Corregidor and Java. His tour also included a fortuitous assignment in Melbourne, Australia where he met his bride, Shirley Johanssen. Mr. Capron retired from the U.S. Navy in 1956, but continued his service to our nation at the National Security Agency until 1971, during which time his family of four, wife Shirley, son, Jim, and daughter, Mary Ellen, lived first in Wheaton, MD and then in Annapolis, MD. After retirement from NSA, he and Shirley moved to Satellite Beach, FL, where they enjoyed the company of Navy friends and fellow retired Annapolitans. Jim and Shirley were married for 62 years until Shirley's death in 2006. Cap Capron particularly enjoyed his HAM radio shack and being on the "net" with Navy buddies and new contacts all over the world. He was a member of the ARRL, Naval Cryptological Veterans Association and the Phoenix Society. Mr. Capron was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Ellen, brother, Arthur, and his wife, Shirley. He is survived by his son, Jim Capron III, his grandson Michael Sutphin, and two great-grandsons. A visitation will be held from 10 - 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 2nd, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Florida Memorial Funeral Home in Rockledge. Interment will follow at Florida Memorial Gardens.3
