Obituary for Orpha M. (Barrett) Capron

March 3rd 1879

Mrs. Orpha M. Capron of this town, after a long illness and much suffering, breathed her last on Monday morning at 2 o’clock. She was the daughter of Charles Barrett, born June 5th in Kingsville, where Mr. Barrett resided before settling in Amboy. In July, 1844, at the age of eighteen, she married Ephraim Capron, and has always lived in this town. They have had nine children, all of whom are living. Dudley and Charles in Texas; Edwin in Michigan; Albert in Ashtabula, and the rest at home and in this vicinity. At the age of fifteen she made a profession of religion and was baptized by Rev. Oliver Barr, October 22, 1841, and united with the Christian Church of this place, of which she has been a faithful and for many years one of the most active members. She was inclined to go beyond her means and strength for the cause she loved so well. No sacrifice seemed too great for her to make for the welfare of her family or the church. Though the church is somewhat prepared for this event by her long absence from the Sabbath services and society meetings, on account of sickness, yet her loss will be deeply felt and her departure greatly lamented. She was a noble-minded woman, of more than ordinary practical abilities, such a one as would be missed in any community. A useful life has closed; but she “being dead yet speaketh”. Many of our citizens will long remember the pleasant hours passed in her home on the Lake Shore, where she was always glad to entertain her friends. Two brothers and two sisters remain, who, with the husband and children, have our sincere sympathy in this sad hour.—Reporter.

The funeral took place on Wednesday at 2:30. Rev. O. T. Wyman officiating. There was a very large attendance.

Cause of death was consumption (tuberculosis). Orpha was 52 yrs. 8 mo. 10 days old.

Note: The Geneva Times printed Orpha’s middle initial as “M” when in fact it was “A” for Ann." She was buried in City Cemetery, Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio.1
Her married name was Capron. She appeared on the census of 1850 at Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio, as the wife of the head of the household, Ephraim Capron.3 Orpha Ann Barrett appeared on the census of 1870 at Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio, as the wife of the head of the household, Ephraim Capron.4
