Biographical Notes for James Lucas Wheaton IV: The following biography is courtesy of his son, James Lucas Wheaton,V:
James Lucas Wheaton IV, loving husband, father, and grandfather, died Oct 7,2004 of cancer at his home in South Kingstown,RI. He was 74. He will be deeply missed by his family, but not without the assurance of the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Mr. Wheaton is survived by his wife Nancy, son James, daughter Kimberly, daughter-in-law Lynnette, son-in-law Bruce, and three grandchildren – Katherine, Steven, and Hannah.
Mr. Wheaton was born in Pawtucket, eventually moving to Washington, DC where he had a 29-year career working with the Department of Agriculture. During his government service Mr. Wheaton was awarded a fellowship to Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He also served his country in the USAF during the Korean War.
A lifetime Episcopalian, Mr. Wheaton was always active in the church community serving in church leadership, singing in choir since age 9, and leading youth groups and Sunday school classes. Most recently Mr. Wheaton was a member of St. Paul's in Wickford, RI.
Mr. Wheaton will be remembered by many for his tireless efforts to re-kindle an awareness of the rich past of the City of Pawtucket. Most notably, Mr. Wheaton worked as co-director of the Spaulding House Research Library and Spaulding House Publications, and for eleven years co-authored a column for The Times entitled Our Times and Before. Mr. Wheaton also co-authored two pictorial histories of Pawtucket and several other publications focused on the city's history, and helped to establish river tours along the Pawtucket River. In 1998 Mr. Wheaton was elected to the Pawtucket Hall of Fame.
As an alumnus of the University of Rhode Island, Mr. Wheaton served in many capacities including service on the URI President's Planning Council, as a trustee of the URI Foundation, and taking leadership roles in many fund raising campaigns. Most recently Mr. Wheaton co-authored a pictorial history of the university entitled The University of Rhode Island. Mr. Wheaton received his bachelor's degree from URI in 1959 and his master's degree in 1961.
Always interested in preservation, Mr. Wheaton was active in the preservation and recording of many of the state's cemeteries and also served on the Executive Board for Pawtucket's Victorian Cemetery Preservation and Restoration Commission and appointed Commissioner to the Rhode Island Historic Cemeteries Commission by the governor. Mr. Wheaton was also proud of the scholarship endowment he and Pawtucket's East Senior High School, Class of 1948 established for future generations.
We'll miss you, but also know that you are sharing in God's promise of eternal life and we make our peace in knowing that we may also share in that same promise.1
