Sacred to the memory
of Captain Levi Aldrich who
died Dec. 22, 1795 in the
66 year of his age.

Christ's arms do still stand open to receive,
All weary prodigals that sin doth leave;
For them he left his Father's blest abode,
Made Son of Man to make man Son of God,
To cure their wounds he life's elixir bled,
And died a death to raise ye from y dead.6 He was buried in Scott Cemetery, Bellingham, Norfolk, Massachusetts.7
     Biographical Notes for Levi Aldrich: Capt. Levi Aldrich was sixteen years old, the very day his son, Major Rufus Aldrich, was born. He was a blacksmith, and had a trip-hammer, a very remarkable thing in those days; and he kept a public house in Men don, Mass., near the Bellingham line. Public v endues, sales of cattle, &c., &c., were held at his house. He was a very large man. but having a small hand and foot, although the calf of his leg was enormously large. Near his tavern a brook crossed the road. The auctions at his inn were usually well attended by the neighbors, especially by a number of men named Streeter, quite diminutive in size, who were generally present. One day, but two of them having arrived, some one said, ' Capt. Aldrich, where are the Streeters?' ' You wont see them here to-day,' said theCaptain. ' I set one of my boots by the brook out here, the other day, and caught seven of them in it in one night. ' I am informed by my antiquarian friend, P. S. Thayer, Esq., of Millville, Mass., that ' when Capt. Levi Aldrich died, A. D. 1796, he weighed over three hundred pounds. He was so very large they were obliged to take the casings off the doors to get the coffin out of the house. Ten of his children attended his funeral, and after he was buried they were weighed, and the aggregate of all their weights was over twenty-one hundred pounds.' Mr. Samuel Cook now (1859) living in (his town). Blackstone, Mass. was present at the above funeral, and 'remembers the circumstance distinctly of taking off the door casings.' Book Of Banfield Capron. He was a blacksmith.
