Before settling in Colorado, he went to Alaska as part of the Klondike gold rush. He participated in the Oklahoma Land Rush where he staked a claim and sold it a few days later.

About 1908 he participated in a land deal in Florida. He bought several pieces of property and sold them in a short time.

Served as a deputy sheriff in Gilpin Co. for a short period of time. The sheriff at this time was Tom Cody. His brother John Cody was also a deputy. They were probably descendants of or relatives of Buffalo Bill Cody who is buried near Russell Gulch.

While serving as a deputy sheriff he was involved in the Gailbraith family murder investigation. This murder was written up in True Detective in about 1936.

He worked as a mine superintendent for several years and then worked for the Colorado Game and Fisheries Department for nearly 30 years.
